AICD, effective electronic device to prevent Sudden Death

Madras Medical Mission (MMM) of Chennai is renowned in the field of cardiology. Recently it saved life of a 60-year-old chartered accountant of the same city. He was admitted to the hospital by his colleagues when he fell in a faint one day.  Senior consultant cardiologist Dr. Ulhas M Pandurangi concluded that the old person was suffering from arrhythmia. He was than operated and the AICD was implanted in his heart.

AICD is basically a computer chipbased device which can detect a massive heart attack or sudden deaths caused by heart rhythm disturbances. The new generation AICDs have not only the capacity of restoring normal rhythm of the heart but also the ability to alert fluid accumulation in the lungs due to worsening of the pumping function of the heart much before any other tests can detect.

AICD also has a wireless device which gets connected to the telephone by the patient. The moment defibrillator detects a cardiac arrest or heart rhythm disturbances it incites the heart with a shock. The wireless device sends a message to the doctor via the telephone at the same time.

Dr. Ulhas M. Pandurangi, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist of Madras Medical Mission said, “Cardiac arrest is reversible in most victims if it’s treated within minutes, but the only effective treatment is the delivery of an electrical shock. With the availability of a product as technologically advanced as AICD we will definitely be able to reduce the mortality rate in this segment.”
