6 50,000 victims being claimed by Conficker botnet a day As per the researchers at security firm Symantec, the Conficker malware infection continues to spread, even after media had stopped covering the virus.

The recent report confirmed that the botnet is still claiming victims at a rate of 50,000 a day, with US, Brazil, India, China, Mexico and Italy having highest number of infections.

The researchers said in a blog post that though media hype seems to have died down around Conficker/Downadup, but it is still out there spreading far and wide.

About Conficker, it spread throughout the world during the early part of the year and media hype was created when the researchers found that the third variant was designed to dial a control server on 1 April.

Though malware was unable to do much harm on 1st April, it did continue to spread throughout April. Later during the month, it was found out by the researchers that a new variant was making the rounds.
