3 held in antique idol theft case
One of the arrested is an engineering student; 250-year-old statue recovered
The police on Friday arrested three people including an engineering student for their alleged involvement in a theft of a 250-year-old antique idol of lord Krishna from Charbhuja Temple in Muhana Police station area on January 12, said SP East Beeju George Joseph.
The stolen idol was also recovered from Muhana village, on revelation of the arrested people, he said.
Joseph said, the accused wanted to sell the antique in Rs20 crore and they had found the customers for that but they did not know that they were dealing with the police team in disguise.
The main accused Abhishek (19) alias Pintu and his accomplices were arrested by special police team in Pratap Nagar Police station area. Accused Abhishek was perusing engineering from a local engineering college.
In his statement, he admitted that he had planned the theft for money with another accused Joyti Prakash Sharma and a compounder Shivakant Patidar, said SP Joseph. All accused were natives of Tonk district and were residing at different places in Jaipur, he added.
Joseph said, earlier, accused clicked the photographs of the idol by their mobile phone and later stole that. They managed to get the duplicate keys of the locks by getting impression of the original keys, he said. The accused called the policemen, who posed as customers, at over 20 places to finalise the deal before they were finally caught by the police, he said.
