2G spectrum proposal by month end: Trai chairman
The telecom regulator Trai said in its statement today that it would release the new 2G spectrum pricing norms by the end of this month. The new norms are likely to be linked with the pricing of the 2G spectrum and 3G spectrum licenses following the controversial auction of 2G spectrums. Most of the industries felt that the issue was under priced to help certain Telecom operators.
The telecom regulator Trai is also expected to recommend an auction for distribution of the 2G spectrum beyond the 6.2 MHz and suggest the scrapping of the recent practice of proving radio waves on the basis of number of subscribers Trai may change the criteria to the geographical coverage from subscriber numbers.
After implementation of this proposal the new mobile operators like Uninor, Loop Telecom and Etisalat may have to purchase the spectrum beyond 6.2 MHz through auction, which are currently using the 2G spectrum of 4.4 Mhz.
Mobile number portability (MNP) is a kind of service which allows a mobile user to change its operator keeping the same number at the same time.
