22nd annual National Geographic Bee starts Washington
Organizers have said that Geography students in fifth through eighth grade competed in Washington on Tuesday in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee.
It has been reported that the top prize for the national winner is a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, along with an all expenses-paid trip with a parent, to the Galapagos Islands.
National Geographic further said that the top 10 finalists at the end of Tuesday's competition stood to $500 each, and go to the final round on Wednesday, which will be aired nationally on the National Geographic Channel. The final round will be hosted by "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek.
National Geographic Society President and Chief Executive Officer John Fahey said, "National Geographic's mission is to inspire people to care about planet. Through the National Geographic Bee and everything else we do at the Society, we hope to foster a lifelong passion for learning about the wonders of the Earth and its diverse lands and cultures."
