17-Year-Old Girl with Rare Genetic Condition Dies
A 17-year-old girl with an uncommon genetic condition that made her body age eight times faster than the average person died.
Hayley Okines had Progeria and her body aged at a rapid rate. It has been reported that Okines had the body of a 104-year-old. Her mother, Kerry made announcement about her daughter's death on Thursday night and she wrote "My baby has gone somewhere better. She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39pm."
About her life with the rare condition, Okines had released two books: 'Old Before My Time' and 'Young at Heart, and she also talked about Progeria in interviews. She said many years ago that she doesn't feel that she was 96. Okines was also the feature of numerous documentaries involving 'The Child Who's Older Than Her Mother.'
She died a little over a year after the death of American teenager Sam Berns, who also suffered from Progeria. Okines also campaigned to raise awareness about the condition. She has been treated in hospital for pneumonia. Family of her notified that she came back home briefly Thursday and met her puppies and her brother and sister.
Her father Mark thinks that she wanted to come home so that she can say goodbye to everybody. According to the Progeria Research Foundation, about 200-250 children are there living with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome worldwide at any time.
Kids with this rare condition start showing symptoms within their first year of life, involving loss of body fat and hair, aged-looking skin and joint stiffness. Later symptoms are osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke. Progeria is genetic disorder which causes people to appear to age in reverse. Many people get inspired by her death and have left touching messages on her Facebook page.
