17-year-old Connecticut Teen, who initially refused Chemo, seeks Release from State Custody
Earlier, a 17-year-old Connecticut teen had refused to take treatment for highly curable cancer. Currently, the teen is in remission. On Monday, her lawyer said that the girl is seeking release to finish her chemotherapy at home.
While talking to NBC News, the girl, called only Cassandra C, said that she has changed her mind about undergoing chemotherapy. During the interview that was conducted through Facebook messages, the teen said, “I'm committed to finishing the rest of my chemo, which is 2 more cycles. I would love more than anything to be able to come home to finish it all. I miss my life so dearly, especially my mom, my cat and my boyfriend”.
According to Cassandra, State child-welfare officials had removed her cell phone in December 2014. About six weeks later, the phone was returned to her, but the device has not been working well, Cassandra said.
She said that it was painful to see how this all happened. She was taken away from her home, strapped to bed for the surgery, she added. According to her, she should be given the right to go with options.
In January, the Connecticut Supreme Court had ordered to keep Cassandra in temporary state custody. According to the court, the teen is too immature to make her own medical conditions. She was ordered by the court to continue her treatment at a Hartford hospital. Cassandra was diagnosed in September last year.
According to her lawyer, assistant public defender Joshua Michtom, the teen wants to finish out her chemo sessions at her home. Next Monday, Michtom will argue for Cassandra's freedom at a hearing in juvenile court. According to the lawyer, the teen has the right to go to her home. If the teen shouldn't complete treatment, there's not a great risk that she would die, Michtom said.
