Johannesburg/Harare - The verification process of the Zimbabwe presidential election entered its second day Friday amid reports that the parties were deadlocked with the opposition continuing to say it won the poll.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) played down the impasse, saying the process was progressing well.

"We have resumed well, the first day was very progressive, obviously we cannot expect everything to match that is why there is need to verify every figure we have from different parties," said Utoile Silaigwana, the ZEC spokesperson. He could not say when the process would end.

Sources who attended the closed-door verification process said the ZEC and the ruling Zanu PF party had not concurred with the figures presented by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The MDC claims that it won the election with an outright majority but Zanu PF argues that a run-off is needed. (dpa)
