Workers’ strike paralyzes iPhone production at Foxconn's Zhengzhou plant

Workers’ strike paralyzes iPhone production at Foxconn's Zhengzhou plantWithin weeks of the launch of the much-awaited iPhone 5, Apple has reportedly run into a problem of sorts, with thousands of workers at Foxconn's iPhone-manufacturing Zhengzhou plant in central China going on a strike on Friday.

According to a Saturday report by rights advocate group China Labor Watch (CLW), it was on Friday afternoon that 3,000-4,000 employees at the Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory went on strike; thereby paralyzing the production of iPhone 5, which is already hit by supply constraints.

The strike by the workers at the Zhengzhou plant is the most recent turbulence to be reported at a Foxconn factory in China; with the stoppage of production by the striking workers coming close on the last-month worker riots at Foxconn's Taiyuan - in north China - factory, where the iPhone production process was halted for 24 hours.

Going by the CLW report, citing the information shared by unidentified workers at the Zhengzhou plant, the strike stems from the workers' increasing anger against the extremely rigorous quality controls and the demand that they should work through the week-long National Day holidays, commencing from Monday.

Reporting that Zhengzhou workers' strike is an upshot of "too much pressure", CLW said in a statement on its website: "In addition to demanding that workers work during the holiday, Foxconn raised overly strict demands on product quality without providing worker training for the corresponding skills."
