Wind Energy share could rise to 35% in US market by 2050: Study
According to a US Department of Energy report, wind power could produce a fifth of the country's electricity by 2030, which is 4.5% more than today. It has been found that wind could become one of the top sources of electricity in America.
According to the report, titled as 'Wind Vision: A New Era of Wind Power in the United States', compiled by the US Department of Energy', wind could provide 20% of the US's electricity by 2030, and 35% by 2050. The report also tells about targets for growth and according to the estimates, these could be easily achieved over long term. And US wind power could be doubled in the next five years with proper policies, according to the report.
According to a summary of the report by the Obama administration, "Wind energy continues to be one of America's best choices for low-cost, zero-pollution renewable energy, and in an increasing number of markets, may be the cheapest source of new energy available".
It is expected that a power mix with 35% wind in the US will offer more jobs, cut emissions and water use in the energy sector. It will also provide energy, which is more stably priced since electricity prices will not be much affected by fluctuations in the price of fossil fuels.
According to estimations, annual consumer savings could reach USD 14 billion a year by 2050. In the meantime, wind projects will also bring tax payments to communities and annual lease payments to landowners.
According to the study, the 35% objective is economically beneficial at present and in the coming time. It is also reported to be technically feasible. Still, some steps are required to be taken in order to achieve the target. These steps include building the needed transmission capacity, identifying persistent wind cost reductions.
