Why Bill Nye wants NASCAR to be like NASA
Bill Nye, the Science Guy, announced on his blog that racing electric cars by National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) are capable of changing the world, but he also accused the venture of considering an outdated transportation technology.
Nye wrote in a blog for Aeon that NASCAR should think about electric cars that may provide a new, smart and efficient transportation technology to the world and help slow down climate change. Today, world needs transportation technology of tomorrow and NASCAR is capable of offering that technology, but the racing outfit is doing the opposite, according to the 60-year-old science educator.
Instead of switching to all-electric cars, NASCAR is celebrating a very old transportation technology of past, Nye accused. He even wrote that the company should be like NASA. It has to learn from the NASA how to work on future technologies, he added. “I wish NASCAR set up Grand Challenges to inspire companies and individuals to create novel automotive technologies in the way NASA does to create novel space technologies”, said Nye, famously known as Bill Nye the Science Guy.
According to Nye, only an electric car has the ability to outperform a gas-powered competitor. In this case, batteries would be replaced by Pit crews. A car of such kind would be quite, faster and capable of slowing down climate change. It would be so quiet that an individual would be able to talk the person next to you, Nye wrote.
Mr. Nye also has a suggesting for the company. He said NASCAR should change its name to NESCAR — National Electric Stock Car Racing. The US can be automotive technology leader if NASCAR (or NESCAR) embraces electric drive trains sooner, according to Nye.
