Web chatter over Google and Twitter

Google and TwitterSan Francisco  - The internet was buzzing with chatter Friday following a report on an influential technology blog that Google was in talks to purchase cellphone blogging site Twitter.

The report on Techcruch. om said that the internet search giant was in late stage of negotiations to buy Twitter for a cash and stock deal which could be the company's biggest acquisition since it snapped up YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars three years ago.

Twitter is a wildly popular and fast-growing internet service that allows people to post comments of up to 140 characters long from their cellphones. However, despite having millions of adherents, the site has yet to develop a revenue model.

Neither Google or Twitter was willing to comment on the report, but Twitter co-founder Biz Stone responded on his own website that "it should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects."

The Wall Street Journal's technology blog All Things D discounted the reported buyout talks, saying that the two companies were merely talking about a far-more-limited product-related alliance about search options for the micro-blogging service. dpa
