Web 2.0 becomes the millionth English word
The Global Language Monitor (GLM) announced on Wednesday that Web 2.0 has become the millionth word or phrase to enter the English language. The GLM reported that Web 2.0 beat the terms, such as Jai Ho, N00b, Slumdog, Cloud Computing, and Carbon Neutral to be the 1,000,000th English word or phrase.
Web 2.0 means the next generation of World Wide Web products and services. The two terms Jai Ho! and slumdog finished number two and number four respectively. The final five included another technical term, cloud computing, and carbon neutral, a term associated with climate change.
The GLM reported that the other words that were added to the list but missed being named as the millionth English word were Sexting, Zombie Banks, and Defriend.
According to the GLM, with its current rate, the English language generates about 14.7 words a day or one every 98 minutes.
The Global Language Monitor is Austin, Texas-based company, which collectively documents, analyzes and tracks trends in language usage worldwide, with a particular emphasis upon the English language.
