Warner Bros sues Mirchi movies for making Hari Puttar
The Mumbai-based studio, Mirchi Movies seems to be getting in some trouble, as the Hollywood studio Warner Bros are in the process to sue the studio producers.
The reason is that Mirchi Movies is soon to release a film by the name of Hari Puttar-A Comedy of Terrors, which according to the Warner Bros will tamper with the copyright of the Harry Potter franchise
A lawsuit has been filed by Warner Bros against Mirchi Movies, which is set to release Hari Puttar on September 12, in which a 10 year old Indian boy is portrayed, who moves to Britain.
The Hollywood company feels that the name is too similar to the title character of vastly popular wizard franchise. The latest film of this franchise titled ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, which was set to release sometime soon but had been delayed to be released next year.
A Spokes person of Warner bros informed, “We have recently commenced proceedings against parties involved in the production and distribution of a movie entitled Hari Puttar. Warner Bros values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation.”
However, Mirchi Movies feel that there should be no conflict over the copyright. As said by Munish Purii, chief executive officer, Mirchi Movies, “We registered the Hari Puttar title in 2005, and it is unfortunate that Warner Bros has chosen to file a case so close to our film's release. In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter.”
The case would be heard on Monday at the Bombay high Court.
