Vienna donor conference to collect funds for Lebanon refugee camp
Vienna - A donor conference for the reconstruction of a destroyed Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon was to bring together Lebanese and Palestinian leaders with international politicians and diplomats in Vienna on Monday.
Reconstructing the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp for 27,000 inhabitants is estimated to cost 282 million dollars, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA).
The camp in northern Lebanon was largely destroyed in the summer of 2007, when Lebanese government units battled fighters of the extremist Fatah al-Islam group. Before that conflict, the camp was home to over 40,000 Palestinians.
Representatives from 50 states, including Lebanese Premier Fouad Seniora, Palestinian Premier Salam Fayad and US Undersecretary for Political Affairs William J Burns were expected to attend the one-day meeting. (dpa)
