Vice President greets people on eve of Mahavir Jayanti

Vice President Hamid AnsariNew Delhi, Apr 17: Vice President Hamid Ansari today greeted the people of India on the eve of Mahavir Jayanti, which marks the birth of Lord Mahavir.

Mahavir Jayanti will be celebrated on Friday.

In his message, Ansari said, “Lord Mahavir’s life and teachings are a beacon of light to guide the mankind on the path of humanism, non-violence and universal love. His teachings have the power to transform the society and free mankind from the shackles of ignorance, violence and moral decay.”

“On this occasion, let us imbibe the enlightened teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir to usher in peaceful and harmonious society,” the Vice President added.

The day celebrates the birth of Mahavira, the last of the 24 Tirthankaras of the Jain community. He was born on the 13th day of the rising moon of Chaitra.

On this day, Jain temples are decorated with flags. In the morning, the idol of Mahavira is given a ceremonial bath called the 'abhishek'. It is then placed in a cradle and carried in a procession. The devotees will make offerings of milk, rice, fruit, incense, lamps and water to the people in procession. (ANI)
