Verizon: 3G usage will decline after iPhone 5 rollout

Verizon: 3G usage will decline after iPhone 5 rolloutAddressing the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference on Thursday, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said that the forthcoming launch of the Apple iPhone 5 will apparently signal the beginning of the downslide for 3G usage.

With Verizon's aggressive and almost-complete 4G LTE rollout to largely determine the carrier's network, marketing as well as repute in the coming times, Shammo said that once the iPhone 5 is launched, 3G usage on the Verizon network will probably witness a notable plunge.

The migration of customers to Verizon's LTE network will seemingly be huge after the iPhone 5 is released because of the fact that the carrier boasts the best LTE coverage thus far in the US; and is set to have LTE coverage as comprehensive as 3G next year.

With Verizon further planning to allocate more spectrum to 4G services once the iPhone 5 hits the markets on September 21, Shammo said that with the LTE capability coming aboard the new iPhone, there will probably be a fall in the 3G usage; thereby making a case for Verizon to "reappropriate that spectrum over 4G."

Despite the fact that Shammo stopped short of touching on the iPhone 5 preorders, he did mention at the conference that Verizon intends pushing its LTE advantage for the new iPhone; and added that, strategically speaking, it cannot be disputed that the carrier is at "an absolutely a strategic advantage when it comes to LTE."
