VAT should be raised on alcohol but not in pubs
As per the views of Dr Nick Sheron, from Southampton University, there should be reverse higher levels of Value Added Tax on alcohol as it in on the coffee drunk in a shop when compared to the one that was taken away by the consumer.
It is to be mentioned here that the doctor has said that the public health will rather improve and will result in giving support to the pub industry as well.
It may be noted here that the doctor was writing in the British Medical Journal where she said that this would be a way around the minimum price per unit of alcohol policy which is unpopular with ministers.
For the record, the findings of the study commissioned by the Department of Health by setting up a minimum price of close to 30 pence per unit, the government can save close to 300 deaths a year and about 1000 by 40 pence and more than 2000 by 50 pence. The doctor added that the difference may look small at the outset but for a regular drinker it is a huge difference.
