United Nations, Sep 28 : UN chief Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the recent string of bombings targeting civilians in India, and reiterated that nothing justifies resort to terrorism.

“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the string of bombings in a number of cities in India in recent weeks targeting places of high civilian concentration,” his office said in a statement.

Ban’s office cited in particular Saturday’s blast in Mehrauli in New Delhi in which two were killed and 22 were injured.

Ban “strongly condemns these reprehensible acts that have caused the death and injury of many civilians and calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice,” the statement added.

The UN chief reiterated “his consistent position that no cause or grievance can justify the resort to terrorism.”

The powerful bomb blast came exactly two weeks after several markets in New Delhi were hit by serial explosions claimed by an Islamist militant group called the Indian Mujahideen that killed 24 people and injured at least 100.

Several other Indian cities -- Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad -- have also been hit by serial bombings since May, and Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for all the blasts. (ANI)
