UK Online TV viewing slowing, survey
According to a new survey, the growth in online television viewing on devices including PC, tablet computers and laptops in the UK has begun to slow. The survey conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the UK audience research organization Barb found that 14.9 per cent of respondents claimed that they have watched television programmes in the previous seven days, compared to 14.4% from the same survey in the previous year. The study included 4,000 viewers in the month of November of 2010.
Barb has said that the slowdown in growth is due to the availability of increased PVR penetration in the UK and the availability of catch-up services on connected TV devices. On the other hand, Barb's biannual study found a small increase in viewing via mobile phones.
About 7 per cent of the respondents said that they watched television through mobile phone compared to 5 per cent in November 2010. About 6.3 per cent in the age group of 15-34 used their mobile phone in the last week to watch television programmes, compared with 3.6% the previous year. In another development, access to LOVEFiLM, 4oD, Demand 5, VEVO, YouTube, MSN, MUZU. TV and Sony's movie and TV video on demand service Crackle will soon be available to users in the UK.
