Two bombs explode in Abkhazia, two people wounded

RussiaMoscow - Two bomb exploded in a market square in Sukhumi, capital of the Black Sea republic of Abkhazia on Monday, slightly wounding two persons, the Interfax agency reported, citing state prosecution officials.

It was the second double-bomb attack in the region within 24 hours. Six people were injured by two blasts in the city of Gagra, north-west of Sukhumi, on Sunday.

Abkhazian authorities blame neighbouring Georgia for being behind the attacks, an allegation which Tbilisi denies.

Abkhazia unilaterally separated from Georgia in 1992, which was followed by the 1992-1993 armed conflict which saw Georgian forces defeated and a ceasefire in 1994.

International organizations, including the United Nations, the EU and others, still recognize Abhkazia as a part of Georgia.

Abkhazia shares borders with both Georgia and Russia, which supports Abkhazian separatist government in Sukhumi. However, a small Georgian-backed autonomous government based in the Kodori Valley east of Sukhumi continues to contest Abkhazia's secession. (dpa)
