Turkish helicopters strike Kurdish towns in northern Iraq

IraqBaghdad  - Turkish military planes struck several Kurdish towns in northern Iraq, while a US pilotless drone crashed in southern Iraq, Kurdish sources and US military said Friday.

Kurdish sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that some Kurdish towns, including Sulimanyia, were intensively raided by Turkish helicopters late Thursday.

Sources did not mention any casualties resulting from the airstrikes, but said that inhabitants had previously moved from the Kurdish areas fearing Turkish attacks.

Meanwhile, a US pilotless drone crashed on Friday in southern Iraq, US military said.

The drone, which was launched from Ali Base, was crashed at approximately 4 am, US military statement said.

No exact location of the incident was mentioned by the US military.

"The aircraft is a medium-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft," the statement said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but a technical error was expected to be the cause.

An investigation is currently underway. (dpa)
