Trans-Fat found to Increase Risk of Heart Disease and Death
A research has come up with new facts on saturated fats and trans-fats. As per the review of existing research, saturated fat in reasonable amount does not pose any problem. On the other hand, trans-fat has been associated with increased risk of death from any reason.
Researchers from the McMaster University have assessed around 50 observational studies to know the association between consumption of both trans-fat and saturated fat and their effect on person’s health.
After going through the studies, the researchers were of the view that consumption of trans-fat increased the possibility of death by 34%, risk of dying from congenital heart disease by 28% and heightened the chances of developing congenital heart disease by 21%.
Saturated fat was not associated with such disease. Trans-fat also known as unsaturated fat is taken out from plant oils and is generally used in margarine and packaged snacks and baked goods. On the other hand, saturated fats come from animal based products like cow, milk, butter, egg yolks and salmon.
“For years everyone has been advised to cut out fats. Trans-fats have no health benefits and pose a significant risk for heart disease, but the case for saturated fat is less clear”, said Russell de Souza from McMaster University.
He also stated that they have not been promoting to have saturated fats, as they have not find out that higher limits would be quite beneficial to health.
