Tihar treats Subrata Roy as an ordinary prisoner
Sahara Group Chief Subrata Roy, who calls himself managing worker of Sahara India Pariwar, will have to sleep on the floor and eat jail food like an ordinary captive.
Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said that Roy would not get any special concession in the jail, and he would be allowed to meet visitors only two times a week.
The spokesperson told reporters, "Unlike other jails, where prisoners are categorized under A, B or C category, we don't have such special class. So, he will be kept as an ordinary prisoner. He will have to sleep on the floor and have to eat jail food."
However, the jail authorities have decided to keep him in a civil cell in order to save him from any potential threat from other prisoners. On the day of hearing in the SC, a man named Manoj Sharma broke through his security ring and emptied a bottle of black ink on his face. The motive of the attacker, however, remained unclear.
The Supreme Court sent Roy into judicial custody for a week after Sahara Group failed to present a concrete plan to return nearly Rs 20,000 crore to investors.
Roy, who was arrested in Lucknow on Friday on the direction of the apex court, told reporters, as he was being taken to jail, that it was the best award the country had given to him.
