Tesla Giga Berlin produces 5,000 units of Model Y within a week

American EV giant Tesla Motors recently achieved another major manufacturing milestone in Germany, where the company’s Giga Berlin-Brandenburg production plant produced 5,000 electric cars within a week for the first time.

Announcing the new milestone, Tesla noted that the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg plant in Grünheide near Berlin achieved the aforementioned production milestone roughly one year after delivering the first batch of Made-in-Germany (MIG) Tesla Model Y crossovers to customers in Europe in March last year.

The milestone represents a big achievement as it marks the American manufacturer’s Europe-dedicated EV plant’s fast ramp-up in production, especially because things weren’t progressing smoothly in the beginning. Even construction of the plant took nearly two years due to waiting for permits.

If the mega production plant continues to produce EVs at the current production rate, it should produce more than 250,000 units in Germany in a year (assuming 50 working weeks in a year).

The previous weekly production level of 4,000 units, which was reported in late February, suggests that the plant has already increased production by 25 per cent in just around a month.

To be more precise, the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg production plant started delivering EVs to customers in Europe in March 2022, and achieved a production rate of 1,000 units per week by 18th of June in the same year. By the beginning of October and mid of December, production rate jumped to 2,000 and 3,000 units per week.

By the final weeks of February and earlier this month, the production plant in question achieved production rates of 4,000 and 5,000 units per week.

That is, of course, not the end of progress. The EV giant is reportedly preparing to further boost its rate of production in Europe. Some reports suggest that the company has plans to increase its production rate to one million units per year. In case the European plant really reaches that milestone, it would come at par with the current output of the Tesla Giga Shanghai production plant in China.

However, it wouldn’t be easy for the American manufacturer to continue to increase its production rates given the fact that it may face some supply constraints. Moreover, it will have to pay attention to maintain balance between supply and demand in parallel to boosting the production of its EVs. Only time will tell whether further increase in production will require some deeper price reductions or not.
