Pak FATA ‘wilder than the wild West’ with Qaeda resurfacing as a new breed of Taliban

New York, Aug 4 : A Pakistani-American historian and expert on South Asia has written in her new book that Al Qaeda has resurfaced in Pakistan’s tribal areas in the form of Taliban.

“Pakistan''s federally administered tribal areas (FATA) are wilder than the wild west because Al-Qaeda has resurfaced here in the form of a new breed of Taliban who are threatening both Afghanistan and Pakistan,” says Tufts University Professor Ayesha Jalal, herself a native of Pakistan.

In her new book “Partisans of Allah: Jihad in South Asia” providing cultural and historical context to jihadi ideals in South Asia, she adds: “It is imperative to understand how this has happened if we are to combat extremism.”

Oslo - The remains of a Norwegian climber who was killed on the K2 mountain in the Himalayas should stay on the mountain slopes, his father said in an interview published Monday.

Rolf Bae's family said it was "difficult" to know that his remains would stay on the mountain but said they did not want other people to risk their lives to find the body.

"We have talked a lot about this. We don't want other people to put themselves in danger to try to find him. Rolf is gone, no matter what we do," Jakob Bae told the Stavanger Aftenbladet newspaper.

S. Asian women more vulnerable to gender discrimination: SAARC body

Islamabad, Aug. 4 : Women in South Asia are more vulnerable to discrimination, social injustice, gender equity and equality as compared to those living in western countries, a meeting of the SAARC Gender Database has opined.

Participants reportedly discussed prioritised indicators on violence against women in the South Asian region, and came to the conclusion that the region that is home to nearly a third of humanity, half of which were represented by women, have the least access to development.

The meeting further said that women are less likely to have access to health services, enjoy civil, political and legal equality with men and benefits from economic and social security.
