Pakistan's outlawed charity rejects UN sanctions

Pakistan MapIslamabad - A Pakistan-based charity denounced on Thursday sanctions by the United Nations Security Council levelled against it for being a front group for the terrorist organization accused of carrying out the Mumbai attacks.

Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) was included in a list of entities subject to an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo by the UN Security Council's al-Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee on Wednesday.

The organization is widely believed to be a new front for the Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT), which Indian authorities said masterminded the November 26 Mumbai siege that killed more than 170 people.

Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hafiz Muhammad SaeedLahore, Dec. 11 : The chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the political wing of the banned militant organization, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hafiz Mohammed Saeed has said that he will approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to arbitrate on the imposition of sanctions on the outfit by the United Nations Security Council.

Addressing a telephonic press conference here on Thursday, Hafiz Saeed sought to put up a defiant stance, claiming that it was concerned by the international clampdown and would contact the UN to clear its position.

Negroponte arrives in Islamabad, may discuss next steps against LeTIslamabad, Dec. 11 : US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte has arrived in the Pakistan capital, and is expected to discuss the latest situation on ground vis-a-vis relations between Pakistan and India, especially in the context of last month's terror attacks in Mumbai.

According to Geo News, Negroponte will hold discussions with President Asif Ali Zardari and other top Pakistani officials.

UNSC did not notify before imposing ban on LeT: Pak envoy

New York, Dec. 11 : Pakistan''s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon has charged a United Nations Security Council committee with failure to contact the Pakistani mission before going ahead with the imposition of sanctions on three Pakistani citizens, labelled as terrorists and organizations allegedly linked to militant activities.

Haroon told GEO News that UN's committee had reviewed many names even before he assumed ambassadorship.

Pakistan, he said, would abide by committee's decisions, he said, but under protest. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has reportedly banned the political wing of the banned militant organization Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the Jamaat-ud-Dawa.

The Security Council has also declared it a terrorist organization.

A committee of the UN Security Council placed financial sanctions on four members of the LeT, as well as the charitable organization that Indian and U. S. officials say serves as the Lashkar''s financial front, according to the U. N.

The four members are Hafiz Saeed, the leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba; Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, its chief of operations; and two finance officials, Haji Mohammad Ashraf and Mahmoud Ahmed Bahaziq.

The 2008 United Nations Human Rights award was given to Bhutto for her services to poor human beings and in recognition of her courageous struggle for restoring democracy in Pakistan, The News reports.

Benazir Bhutto was among seven international personalities who were conferred with the honour this year.
