Islamabad, Feb. 13: Pakistan may have acknowledged for the first time on Thursday that parts of the Mumbai terrorist attacks were planned on its soil, but officials in Washington are seeing the development as a political salvo aimed at easing tensions with India.
The New York Times quoted an official of the US State Department as saying that the acknowledgement by Pakistan was a "political decision" to ease tensions with India.

Committee members charged Butt with violating the privilege of the Senate.
"The PCB chairman has passed negative remarks against the sports committee that is tantamount to the breach of privilege of the Senate," The News quoted a member of the committee, Haroon Khan, as saying.
Peshawar, Feb. 13 : The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has warned that it will carry out more suicide attacks on Awami National Party (ANP) leaders similar to that which killed an ANP leader Alam Zeb Khan.
Taking responsibility for the blast, a close aide of Baitullah Mehsud, the chief of the TTP, Hakeemullah Mehsud, threatened of more attacks in the future.
"We carried out this attack and will continue such attacks on ANP leaders in future," The Daily Times quoted Mehsud, as saying.
Alam Zeb Khan succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
Rawalpindi, Feb. 13 : The trial of all the nine suspects arrested by Pakistani authorities in connection with the Mumbai terror attack would be held in camera at the Adiala Central jail, The Dawn reports.
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has asked for strict security provisions at the Adiala Central jail where they would be tried under the Anti-Terrorism law.
"All suspects would be kept in `high security barracks' in Adiala. The agency has requested the federal government to deploy Rangers for additional security," sources said.
New Delhi, Feb 12, : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday welcomed Pakistan's admission that some part of the conspiracy on Mumbai attacks has taken place on its soil and said the dossier was tightly argued document that no one can ignore it.
Addressing the media, Chidambaram said, "My initial response is that it is a positive development. The dossier handed over on January 5 was an exceptionally and tightly argued document, a cogently argued document that no one can ignore it."
