Supermarket steak as good as from the butchers: Choice
According to a consumer group, BEEF steaks from supermarket chains rate as highly as top butcher cuts.
A steak is put by the Choice consumer group from Aldi, Coles and Woolworths to the test aligned with complain from a finest butcher.
A test of six raw cuts of meat was done by a panel of three judges. In this test all butchers with a combined experience of 75 years in the butchery and hospitality industry were included.
The test was done according to color; marbling and amount of fat. Rump, sirloin, T-bone, scotch fillets, blade and eye fillet from Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and a first-class butcher were tested.
According to the experts, Coles had the best T-bone steak, Aldi the top rump and Woolworths the juiciest sirloin steak.
The premium butchers scored the highest for its scotch fillet while the blade steak and eye fillet scored equally across all outlets.
Today Choice spokeswoman Ingrid alleged that despite some claims that supermarket butchers are unproven or poorly trained, the shocking result from our study was the impressive set of the chain store cuts and the variation in the quality of offering from the premium butcher.
