Spain reinforces Melilla frontier as migrants try to storm it again

Melilla  - Spain has reinforced the frontier of its enclave of Melilla on the Moroccan coast after African would-be immigrants made their second attempt to storm it within 24 hours, officials said Monday.

About 20 people trying to enter Melilla were stopped by frontier guards on the Moroccan side of the border late Sunday. Spain temporarily interrupted the movement of people and vehicles through the Beni-Enzar border post.

The migrants had hoped that frontier controls might be more relaxed during the Euro semifinals football match between Spain and Italy, reports said.

The attempt followed the entry of some 70 migrants most of whom were detained the night before. Several police officers were injured in the stampede.

In 2005, thousands of Africans made attempts to storm the fences surrounding the Spanish autonomous cities of Melilla and Ceuta from Moroccan soil. At least 14 migrants were killed.

This time, the migrants did not try to climb fences but to run over the border crossing. (dpa)
