Barcelona - Spanish police detained at least four suspected Islamist extremists Thursday in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, police said.

Some reports put the number of arrests at eight. The detainees were suspected of funding terrorist cells.

Most of the arrests were made in Santa Coloma de Gramanet and Badalona near the Catalan capital Barcelona. Police searched at least four addresses. (dpa)
