Social networking sites indicate hate material was uploaded from Pakistan: DEIT
Social networking sites, including Facebook, have indicated that morphed images and hate material on their pages were uploaded from Pakistan, the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DEIT) said.
The inflammatory content uploaded from Pakistan aimed at whipping up communal passions and creating a fear psychosis among Northeast Indians. The morphed images and hate content led to Northeast Indians' mass exodus from different parts of the country over the past week.
The DEIT said in a statement, "The initial response from international social networking sites indicates that such content has been hosted from outside the country and to a large extent from a neighbouring country (Pakistan)."
Social networking sites responded after Indian government ordered a ban on around 245 pages of their sites, saying that hate material showing alleged atrocities on Muslims was creating disturbance in the country.
Hosting of such morphed images and video triggered a lot of provocative comments on blogs, and led to circulation of hate SMSes.
Previously, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde held a conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik, who demanded evidence related to involvement Pakistan-based individuals or groups in the spreading of hate material. Later, union home secretary RK Singh announced that India would share evidence with Pakistan to prove its claim.
Out of the 254 offensive URLs, India authorities have already blocked 124 URLs on different websites, while another 80 would be blocked shortly.
