1. Telecom regulator TRAI has told the government that it cannot suggest a price for auction of spectrum in CDMA-band in the stipulated 15 days and the process needs to be started afresh if reserve price for such airwaves is to be set.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had in September proposed a cut of up to 60 per cent in the minimum auction prices for mobile phone spectrum used by GSM technology players like Airtel and Vodafone, but recommended no auction of 800 MHz spectrum used by CDMA players.
The regulator was criticized for allegedly favoring GSM service providers and last week the Telecom Commission asked TRAI to recommend the reserve price for 800 MHz band within 15 days.
2. Competition Commission of India will this month pass an order on the issue of its authority to probe alleged cartelization on fixing of petrol prices, as questioned by oil marketing firms.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is currently looking into suspected unfair trade practices by state-run oil marketing firms while setting petrol prices. The oil companies had challenged the CCI saying the regulator had no jurisdiction on looking at fixing of petrol prices. The firms had told the CCI they are regulated by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board
3. The government has given six months to one year more time to as many as 30 special economic zone developers including Tata Consultancy Services and Parsvnath to execute their projects.
The decision was taken by an inter-ministerial Board of Approval (BoA) chaired by Commerce Secretary S R Rao in its meeting on November 8. As many as 30 SEZs have been given more time to execute their projects. The developers had cited reasons like global meltdown and fluctuating market conditions for delay in completion of the projects.
4. IT industry body Nasscom has said that the sector in the country would grow by 12-14% while IT exports are likely to reach $86 billion in the current fiscal on the back of adoption of new technologies and tapping new geographies by corporate.
