Second Phase Of Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign LaunchedAiming the administering of an additional polio vaccine to approximately 70 lakh kids below 5-years, the second phase of the Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation campaign was started across Tamil Nadu on February 7.

A total of 40,399 polio booths were established in schools, government hospitals, primary health centres, Anganwadis, bus stands, railroad terminals as well as tourist spots to administer polio drops to kids.

Polio booths will also be set up covering all transit points like railway stations, bus stations and traveler spots to cover the floating populace. Mobile teams were also sent to reach the population in far-flung and unreachable regions.

In Chennai, M. Subramanian, Chennai Corporation Mayor, inaugurated the immunisation programme by administering oral polio drops to the kid of Councillor Vijayalakshmi Jayasankar.

The campaign aimed more than five lakh kids crosswise an estimated 1,126 immunisation centres. The initial phase had been launched on January 10 by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, eyeing about 70 lakh kids all over the State.

The kids, who missed the drops on Feb 07, will be administrated the vaccine by house-to-house visits of the groups from Feb 8 to 10.

No polio case was reported in Tamil Nadu during the last six years. Andhra Pradesh has been "polio-free" for the last one year.

In Hyderabad, the pulse polio programme was mutually launched by DM&HO and GHMC.
