A lot of visitors gathered at Monterey Bay Aquarium on Saturday to catch a rare glimpse of a sea otter giving birth to a pup after climbing atop a rock in an attempt to escape turbulent sea waters resulting out of El Niño storms.

The pregnant sea otter swam from the ocean into the Great Tide Pool, which is a sheltered body of water at the edge of the aquarium. The entire incident of the incredible birth was filmed by workers at the facility as a matter of chance.

After giving birth, the mother otter started a grooming exercise to keep the pup warm by pulling the little one close to her chest. Monterey Bay Aquarium spokeswoman Angela Hains said otter pups have a kind of “floating cork,” a thick layer of fur that makes them buoyant.

Over the past three months, this is the second time that a pregnant otter has showed up at the aquarium’s Great Tide Pool. The spokeswoman said the laboring mother-to-be otter started napping, grooming, pacing and behaved as if she was inside a maternity ward.

The visitors watching the incident reported it on Instagram, watched in “respectful quiet,” then “gasped (quietly).” The otter delivery compiled with an easy listening soundtrack similar to the tunes used on TLC’s “A Baby Story” can be watched on the aquarium’s video at the top of this post.

“Sea otter scientists working for decades on research … had never seen anything like this before. The wild sea otter remained in the pool caring for her new pup until Monday, then swam out to sea. But the mother and her pup returned later that day”, said the spokeswoman.

Sea otters were once considered almost extinct but they have now become a crucial part of Monterey Bay’s ecosystems.
