SC issues notice to Tata Motors in Singur land acquisition caseWest Bengal Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee described the Supreme Court's recent notice to Tata Motors on a special leave petition filed by her government challenging its quashing by the Calcutta High Court as a "victory" of the farmers.

On Friday, the apex court issued notice to Tata Motors on the West Bengal government's petition challenging a Calcutta High Court order that held as unconstitutional its Singur land act to repossess four-hundred acres given to the Nano car manufacturer.

Welcoming the development, Mamata said, "I am so happy today to hear the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court on Singur land case. It is a victory of the long struggle of the poor land-losers not only of Singur, but also of those in the entire country."

She added that the land in question was now with the state government, which would distribute it its original owners with proper legal clarification from the court.

Mamata Banerjee government had passed the Singur Land Rehabilitation & Development Act in 2011 to reclaim the land so that it could be returned to the farmers who had not accepted the compensation for their lands. But the Calcutta High Court held the Act unconstitutional in a June 22 order, but given the state government two months to appeal in the Supreme Court and also let the government to keep possession of the land till then.

Following the Supreme Court's notice to Tata Motors, Mamata reiterated that the Singur Land Rehabilitation & Development Act is valid.
