Saya, the world's first robot teacher, teaches at a Japan’s primary school
Saya is the teacher, who doesn’t get livid with students making noise or playing in class. She is extremely popular with the students. Well, Saya is the world's first robot teacher that has recently started teaching in a Japanese primary school.
Saya is a humanoid female robot developed by Professor Hiroshi Kobayashi of Tokyo University of Science. Saya is an android designed to teach at Kudan Primary School, adjacent to Tokyo University.
According to Prof. Kobayashi, Saya acts like a normal teacher; she calls names of students; she talks, moves her head, answers questions. Saya’s language includes approximately 300 phrases and a vocabulary of some 700 words. Saya’s skull is covered with fine latex. The robot teachers used a series of 18 motors for making facial expressions; the series of motors function as human muscles.
Prof. Kobayashi says, “The aim is to develop something that is useful to society and humans in daily life. The robot teacher is the perfect application for a robot. The children were not fazed by Saya at all. They don't see her as a humanoid but human. They were very happy and surprised when she was able to call their names. They treated her like a real teacher.”
