Sarabjit Singh’s sister meets Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Mar 17 : Sarabjit Singh’s sister Dalbir Kaur meets Rahul GandhiDalbir Kaur, the sister of Sarabjit Singh, who is likely to be hanged on April 1, met Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi here today.

Kaur told Rahul that Sarabjit is being denied justice and that his case was that of mistaken identity.

After the meeting, Kaur told reporters that Rahul has assured her of his full support and had promised personal meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi.

"I have asked Rana Abdul (Sarabjit's Lahore-based lawyer) to file a fresh appeal. Apart from that, Rahul has asked me to send an appeal on behalf of our family to the Pakistan Government," Kaur said.

Meanwhile, both the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP expressed concern over the Sarabjit issue in the Rajya Sabha today.

Chairman Hamid Ansari said he would request the Government to respond to the concerns of the members.

It may be recalled that in an attempt to put a pressure on the Governments of India and Pakistan, Kaur had earlier threatened self-immolation.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has rejected a mercy plea of Sarabjit close on the heels of the release of Kashmir Singh, another death row prisoner who was recently released by the neighbouring country.

Pakistan's Supreme Court rejected Sarabjit's mercy petition in March 2006. He has been awarded capital punishment for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Pakistan in 1990.

The Indian Government has pressed for clemency for Sarabjit, but has not made a formal request on his behalf. (ANI)
