A team of surgeons successfully removed a six feet iron rod from the stomach of a 21-year-old man. It is a miracle for Santosh Kumar, who is a construction worker and had a nightmarish experience when a six feet iron rod fell from the 10th floor of the building at the construction site and pierced his body through shoulder and abdomen before coming out through his left thigh. It had penetrated his intestines in multiple locations and made 16 holes.

He was brought to the ‘Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pune where a team of surgeons operated upon him for five-and--half-hours and successfully removed the rod from his body. Dr.Gajanan Wagholikar, Senior Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon, said: “It is an amazing feat. Such incidents are very rarely reported in medical literature. The people who have undergone such accidents have not been able to come out of them alive.” 

Explaining the operation he carried out, he added: “Two segments of the intestine were badly damaged. While they had to be sacrificed and healthy intestine reconnected, the other holes were closed.” Now the rod is out of Kumar's body but the scars remained to tell the story of the nightmare. For him, it is a rebirth. Kumar said: “I have got a rebirth in Pune.”
