Thabo Mbeki leaves Zimbabwe without a deal amid reports of backroom pact

South African President Thabo MbekiHarare/Johannesburg - After three days of talks on a power- sharing government between Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai that ended in deadlock, mediating South African President Thabo Mbeki left Zimbabwe Wednesday.

As Mbeki left for Angola to report back on the talks to Angolan President Eduardo dos Santos, conflicting reports over whether Mugabe had gone over Tsvangirai's head and signed a deal with a breakaway faction of Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) continued to swirl.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the agreement with Arthur Mutambara is expected to sideline Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the main MDC bloc, who beat Mr Mugabe in the first round of the presidential election in March, taking just short of 50 per cent of the vote.

Around 14 hours of talks between the two leaders under the mediation of South African President Thabo Mbeki were adjourned in the early hours of Monday morning without an agreement.

Mugabe, 84, was the first to leave Rainbow Towers hotel, where the talks that are subject to a media blackout were taking place behind closed doors.
