Leander nominated as VP Bengal Tennis

Indian tennis star Leander PaesIndian tennis star Leander Paes has been nominated as vice-president of the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA).

The decision was taken at the 67th Annual General Meeting of the BTA held at the BTA complex in Kolkata.

"Leander has shown keen interest for the development of tennis in the state. So, we have included him in the BTA top management keeping in mind the interest of the game," said BTA secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee.

Chatterjee was re-elected to the post this time also.

Sushil Mehrotra was elected the president.

West Bengal CM condemns Mumbai terror strikes

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb BhattacharjeeKolkata, Nov. 28: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today condemned the terror attacks in Mumbai.

He said it was a challenge for the people of the country to remain calm and resolute and to try to overcome the menace unitedly.

He also expressed a hope for a robust national response to terrorism and added that there was no doubt in his mind that foreign forces are behind this attacks.

He offered his condolences to the families of the victims of the attacks.

Cases registered against Trinamool MLA

Two police cases were registered against Trinamool Congress MLA Sonali Guha and her supporters for causing obstruction in discharge of duty and criminal intimidation, among other offences.

"We have filed two cases under Sections 353, 341 and 506 against Guha and her supporters Wednesday for locking at least 13 policemen including IC (inspector-in-charge) S Basu inside Nodakhali police station in South 24 Parganas on Tuesday night," a police officer said.

Ms. Guha had stormed into Nodhakhali thana that falls in her constituency with her supporters on Tuesday protesting against the partisan attitude of the local police.

This issue was raised in the West Bengal assembly.

WB CM Admits His Failures In Singur & NandigramWest Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Wednesday admitted his failures for not setting up industries at Singur and Nandigram, particularly with regard to foreign investors.

Speaking at the National Executive Meet of FICCI, Bhattacharjee said, “Singur and Nandigram have sent a wrong signal to investors both in India and abroad. Very often foreigners who meet me ask me about them and I had to explain (why this has happened).”

He said that the government needs to be very cautious towards land acquisition.

Ruia demands 12-year sales tax exemption

Dunlop Chairman Pawan Kumar RuiaDunlop Chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia, asked for 12-year sales tax exemption from the government to save the industry from impact of the global slowdown. The company needs Rs 70 crore to resume operations and it has applied for bank loan which would be sectioned within 2-3 months. Ruia is also meeting the state Labour Minister Mrinal Banerjee for seeking tax exemptions to achieve long-term revival plans of the company.

Residents in enclaves on Indo-Bangla border complain of lack of facilities

West Bengal MapTeen Bigha (West Bengal), Nov 21 : Thousands of families living in enclaves along the porous India-Bangladesh border lament that the steps taken by the governments on either side of the border are not sufficient to meet their development needs.

They also complained that their enclaves are victims of indifferent attitude from authorities on both sides.

Mostly located in the district of Cooch Behar of West Bengal, there are as many as 111 Bangladeshi enclaves, which fall in the Indian territory and 58 Indian enclaves falling in the Bangladesh territory.
