Astronomers find evidence for cloudy weather on failed stars

Astronomers find evidence for cloudy weather on failed starsWashington, Oct 4 : A team of University of Hawaii, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and MIT astronomers, using one of the Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea, has found evidence for cloudy weather on failed stars.

The star in question, 2M1404B, has a mass of about 3 percent of the mass of our sun and lives with its slightly more massive sibling, 2M1404A, 75 light-years away in the constellation of Centaurus.

While 2M1404A is socked in by thick clouds, the cloud layer in 2M1404B seems to be breaking up into patches.

Gene expression in alligators suggests birds have ‘thumbs’

Washington, Oct 4 : By examining the expression of a particular gene in alligators, biologists have found that birds also have “thumbs”.

The research was conducted by Alexander Vargas and colleagues at Yale University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Bird wings only have three fingers, having evolved from remote ancestors that, like humans and most reptiles, had five fingers.

Biologists have typically used embryology to identify the evolutionary origin (homology) of structures. The three fingers of the bird wing develop from cartilage condensations that are found in the same positions in the embryo as fingers two, three and four of humans.
