Omar Gains Strength To Hurricane On Tuesday, Omar, which is the 15th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season that began June 1 and ends November 30, attained hurricane strength with top winds of 75 mph and is presently heading towards Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  

Omar was formed on Tuesday in the eastern Caribbean, following which it threw heavy rains on the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao off the coast of Venezuela. Its center was about 315 miles (505 km) south-southwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico at 11 p.m. ET.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers at University of California Los Angeles scrutinized people engaged in searching the Web, while at the same time their brain activity was recorded with the help of functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. 

US turning to tribal leaders to fight out Taliban from Afghanistan

Jalalabad (Afghanistan), Oct 16 : Taking a cue from a recent successful experiment whereby a tribal leader ousted the Taliban from his district in Afghanistan, the US now increasingly wants to encourage other tribal elders in the strife-torn country to do the same.

In what is being described as a substantial policy shift, the US wants to “use tribes to bring law and order to the vast areas of the country beyond the government’s authority”.

Hajji Malik Zahir, the tribal leader accomplished this, a task which the armies of Afghanistan and America could not over the past seven years, with the help of sticks, knives and small arms which his tribesmen had for self-defence.

Washington, Oct 16 : A new study from Columbia University has revealed that emotions play a crucial role while negotiating offers.

Scientists Andrew Stephen and Michel Tuan Pham looked at the interplay of emotion and reason in everyday deal making and found that our negotiating skills depend on our emotions to some extent.

The participants were made to play a classic negotiation game called the “ultimatum game.”

In the ultimatum game, one person (the “proposer”) has a given amount of cash, which he is told to divide with a second person any way he likes. The catch is that the second person must either accept the offer or reject it entirely, no negotiation allowed. If he rejects it, both players walk away with nothing.

Brain pressure leads to vision loss more often in men

Washington, Oct 16: Men are more likely than women to suffer vision loss as a result of a particular cause of intracranial hypertension (IIH), or increased pressure in the brain, according to new study.

IIH is a neurological disorder involving too much cerebrospinal fluid pressure, resulting in severe headaches, swelling of the optic nerves, vision loss, double vision, and a whooshing noise in the ears.

To reach the conclusion, boffins reviewed the medical records of 721 people with this kind of intracranial hypertension.

Only nine percent of the group was male. Participants underwent eyesight exams and brain scans.

Ghostly glow reveals galaxy clusters in collision

Washington, Oct 16 : A team of scientists, including astronomers from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), have detected long wavelength ‘ghostly’ radio emission from a colliding, massive galaxy cluster which, surprisingly, is not detected at the shorter wavelengths typically seen in these objects.

The discovery implies that existing radio telescopes have missed a large population of these colliding objects.

It also provides an important confirmation of the theoretical prediction that colliding galaxy clusters accelerate electrons and other particles to very high energies through the process of turbulent waves.

This new population of objects is most easily detected at long wavelengths.
