Scientists create electronics with a twist, literally

Washington, Nov 20 : Scientists have developed electronics that not only can be bended or stretched, but can also be twisted, which could pave the way for new flexible sensors, transmitters, new photovoltaic and microfluidic devices, and other applications for medical and athletic use.

Improving upon their so-called "pop-up" technology, the scientists have created circuits that can be subjected to any complex deformation, including twisting.

US not aware if Osama is dead

US not aware if Osama is deadWashington, Nov 20: A White House spokesperson has said that despite his continuing silence the US administration had no information whether Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was dead.

The statement came in the wake of a recent broadcast of a new message from al-Qaeda’s number two Ayman Zawahiri.

Asteroid may have shut down Mars’ magnetic field

Asteroid may have shut down Mars’ magnetic fieldWashington, Nov 20 : A new study has suggested that an asteroid struck Mars with such a massive force in the past that it could have killed off the planet’s entire magnetic field.

When the Red Planet formed, it is thought to have been much like a young Earth -- hot, full of water, and roaring with a molten, churning core and mantle.

The liquid rock and metal formed a magnetic dynamo that helped protect its surface and thick atmosphere from cosmic radiation.

Marijuana can surprisingly improve age-related memory loss

Washington, Nov 20 : A daily puff of a marijuana can help reduce memory loss in old age and fight Alzheimer''s Disease, a shocking new study has revealed.

According to Ohio State University scientists, specific elements of marijuana can be good for the aging brain by reducing inflammation there and possibly even stimulating the formation of new brain cells.

The research suggests that the development of a legal drug that contains certain properties similar to those in marijuana might help prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Though the exact cause of Alzheimer’s remains unknown, chronic inflammation in the brain is believed to contribute to memory impairment.

Astronomers detect rare explosion of binary star inside planetary nebula

Washington, Nov 20: A team of astronomers has detected the explosion of a binary star inside a planetary nebula, an event that has not been witnessed for more than 100 years.

According to Dr Roger Wesson, from UCL (University College London) Physics and Astronomy, although several novae are discovered each year in our Galaxy, this is only the second time that a nova has been seen inside a planetary nebula, the first being over 100 years ago.

Now, the light flash from the explosion is passing through and illuminating the surrounding nebula.

“This object poses a major challenge to current theories of how stars evolve and could be a Rosetta Stone in understanding some aspects of the lives of stars,” said Wesson.

At-risk teens and young adults more likely to engage in anal intercourse

Washington, Nov 20 : Teens and young adults, who recently had unprotected vaginal sex, have higher tendency to engage in heterosexual anal sex, says a new study.

The findings of the research by researchers at the Bradley Hasbro Children''s Research Center reflect recent data indicating that anal sex rates among adults doubled between the years 1995 and 2004.

Being one of the first of its kind, the study has highlighted the little-known factors linked with heterosexual anal intercourse among adolescents and young adults.
