Anarchists, trade unionists host anti-NATO summit Warsaw  - Some 300 people held a largely peaceful anti-NATO protest in Krakow's main square as the alliance's defence ministers met in the southern Polish city.

The protests were organized by the Stop War Initiative, the August 80 trade union and the Anarchist Federation, reported the Polish Press Agency PAP.

"We're against NATO's politics, and we demand pulling out forces from Afghanistan and a halt to the arms race," protester Katarzyna Puzon told PAP. "We find it equally absurd to be spending public money in the times of crisis."

Poland FlagKrakow, Poland - NATO is to launch a second anti-piracy naval mission off the coast of Somalia in the spring, the alliance's spokesman said in Krakow on Thursday.

James Appathurai said defence ministers meeting in the Polish city had given their broad backing to the mission, whose details would be worked out during the coming weeks.

Four NATO warships and several helicopters patrolled the Gulf of Aden and escorted World Food Program vessels carrying aid to Africa on behalf of the UN between October and December. The mission helped deliver 30,000 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid to Somalia, NATO said.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who was heading the two-day gathering, even said that he had largely given up hope that NATO countries would be willing to commit more troops to Afghanistan.

Instead, Gates said he would stress the need for help later this spring and summer to counter militants and improve security for planned elections there, something NATO officials have already said would require 10,000 reinforcements.

Poland, US sign deal on special forces cooperation

PolandWarsaw - Polish and US officials signed a deal Thursday designed to increase cooperation between Polish and American special forces in their fight against global terrorism.

Polish Defence Minister Bogdan Klich and US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates signed the memorandum of understanding on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Krakow.

Klich called the memo a "milestone" on the road to strengthening Polish special forces in modern operations.

"I think the value of this agreement will be shortly tested out during operations in Afghanistan," Klich said.
