Aid agency: UN peacekeepers failing to protect Congolese civilians

Kenya MapNairobi - United Nations peacekeepers are failing to protect civilians from Ugandan rebels in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where over 900 people have been butchered since Christmas, humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Wednesday.

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) embarked on its murderous spree following a combined attack by Ugandan, Congolese and southern Sudanese forces.

African Union elects Gaddafi as new chairman

Moamer GaddafiNairobi/Addis Ababa- Long-term Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi was Monday elected new chairman of the African Union during a summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

The 66-year-old immediately vowed to push on with his pet project, the creation of a United States of Africa.

However, Gaddafi admitted that there was much work to be done and that African leaders were nowhere near agreement.

Gaddafi and some of his allies believe that only a united Africa can tackle the long-term issues of poverty and disease and make the continent a global powerhouse.

Kenya mourns double-disaster deathsNairobi  - Kenya on Monday began a week of official mourning for around 130 people who died in a supermarket blaze and a fire that broke out as people tried to siphon off fuel from an overturned petrol tanker.

President Mwai Kibaki on Sunday declared the week of mourning, saying that official functions would be cancelled and flags would be flown at half-mast.

Over 100 people died and many more were injured on Saturday evening at the scene of the tanker fire, near the town of Molo.

Rift Valley provincial commissioner Noor Hassan Noor said the accident happened on Saturday evening near the town of Molo, north-west of the capital Nairobi.

The death toll, many of them believed to be women and children, is expected to rise. Some reports suggest it could reach 130.

More than 150 people were hospitalized with injuries.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which in September declared a ceasefire after a week of attacks platforms, pipelines and oil flow-stations owned by Chevron, Shell and Agip, said it would resume hostilities.
