Long-sleeves make suitable summer office look

Munich - Office workers know that in high summer it can be difficult to dress professionally and at the same time feel comfortable in warm temperatures.

Although women have it easier than men, it's often impossible to achieve both when dressing for work.

"As harsh as it sounds, men of the world wear long sleeves under a suit or sports coat even when it's 32 degrees Celsius," said Georg Stiels, a style consultant in Munich. "Anything else is in fact unfashionable."

Siemens confirms plans to shed Czech rolling-stock plant

Munich : Siemens, the German engineering group, confirmed Wednesday plans to dispose of a transportation-division plant that employs 950 people in the Czech Republic, but said it hopes to find a buyer rather than close the site.

The components plant in Prague was earmarked for disposal as part of a scheme to save German jobs during the current job-cutting drive at the Munich-based group, which seeks to shrink its workforce while keeping the same volume of business.

Siemens said the site makes components for the group's high-speed Velaro trains, known in Germany as inter-city expresses (ICE), and for slower passenger trains.

Uigur emigrant leaders accuse China of repression

Munich - Uigur emigrant leaders in Germany charged Monday that China was stepping up a crackdown against militants of the Turkic-language minority in advance of this summer's Olympic Games.

China has described the Uigur autonomy movement and Rabiya Kadeer, leader of the Uigur World Congress, as terrorist.

In Munich, where there is a permanent Uigur community of 600, Kadeer said recent violence had included the shooting deaths of five Uigur students on July 9 during the search of homes in the town of Urumqi, and the public execution the same day of two Uigur.

He said armed troops compelled 10,000 people to witness the execution by gunshot.

Lack of moving parts makes solid drives attractive for notebooks

Munich - At first glance, the EeePC and the MacBook Air do not seem to have much in common. But on closer inspection, both portable computers use solid state drives (SSD) or one that has no moving parts and significant advantages over traditional drives.

Solid state drives are becoming common in personal computers. While the EeePC uses an SSD as its standard hard drive, the Apple offers users an SSD option to upgrade traditional drives.

The EeePC from Asus is a stripped down notebook selling for 399 euros (635 dollars). Its SSD has a 12 GB capacity, enough for e-mails, some music and loads of photos.
