UK prisoners converting to Islam for gang protection

London, Jan 13 : Prisoners at one of the Britain's top security prisons are converting to Islam for protection because of a rife gang culture, an inspection report has said.

Inmates at Long Lartin prison said some were "becoming Muslim" because it is a "bigger gang," The Telegraph reported.

Radical cleric Abu Qatada, once described as Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe, was held at the prison last year before being released on bail, which he went on to breach.

Similar concerns were raised in an inspection report in to Whitemoor Prison in Cambridgeshire last year, in which prison officers warned extremist Muslim prisoners are ganging up on others in an attempt to radicalise them.

Pope orders bishops to investigate claims of seeing Jesus, Virgin Mary’s visions

Benedict XVILondon, Jan 13 : The Pope has ordered his bishops to thoroughly investigate claims by some people that they have seen visions of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church plans to help his bishops in distinguishing between true and false claims of visions of messages, stigmata, weeping and bleeding statues and Eucharistic miracles.

Benedict XVI hopes to be able to cut down on an explosion in the number of bogus heavenly apparitions with new guidelines to help his bishops to root out frauds, reports the Telegraph.

Claude Monet''s painting ‘Dans La Prairie’ goes under the hammer next month

London, Jan 13 : A painting by Claude Monet, which is said to have started the new trend of "Impressionism" with its colour-filled canvas, built with darting brushstrokes, is to go under the hammer next month.

The painting, Dans La Prairie, painted in 1876 and first shown at an exhibition in Paris in 1877, features the artist''s wife Camille almost submerged in a flower-strewn field in Argenteuil, to the north of Paris.

Monet''s skill in capturing the scene even bedazzled his contemporary, Paul Cezanne.

"Monet is the strongest of us. He''s only an eye, but, my God, what an eye!" the Telegraph quoted Cezanne as having said about the artist.

It rained money for gold and silver markets in 2008

London, Jan. 13: Gold and silver trading registered a record activity since the start of the credit crisis, according to the (IFSL) International Financial Services London''s Bullion Markets'' 2009 report.

In 2008, gold turnover increased 58 per cent to a record 20.2 trillion dollars. There was 39 per cent increase in silver trading during the year to a record 2.6 trillion dollars.

It has been stated that the traditional "safe-haven" appeal of precious metals attracted many investors to this asset class.
