Barclays bank announces further job cuts

Barckays banks logoLondon  - Britain's Barclays bank Wednesday announced further staff reductions which bring to more than 4,000 the number of jobs that will be shed at the bank in Britain and overseas.

Barclays, Britain's third-biggest bank, said it planned to cut 2,100 jobs at its retail and commercial banking business, affecting many high street branches.

The announcement came less than 24 hours after it confirmed proposals to cut at least 2,100 posts at its investment banking arm, Barclays Capital, and at Barclays Global Investors business.

Milan would pocket 100 million pounds and Brazilian playmaker Kaka almost 75 million pounds for a five-year deal worth 15 million pounds a season - or 280,000 pounds per week.

Royal Bank of Scotland sells stake in Bank of China London - Britain's Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announced the sale of its stake in the Bank of China for 1.6 billion pounds (2.3 billion dollars) on Wednesday.

The Edinburgh-based bank, which also owns NatWest, was effectively nationalized during the banking crisis when the government took a majority share of almost 58 per cent.

RBS acquired the 4.3-per-cent holding in the Bank of China for 900 million pounds in August 2005.
