YogaKuala Lumpur, Nov 24: After imposing a ban on Muslims from practicing yoga, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) Director-General Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abd Aziz has reportedly said that Muslim yoga centre operators would have to find other forms of exercise to teach.

“I’m sure they are smart enough to diversify their businesses or find alternatives,” he said, adding that those who wished to seek clarification should refer to the relevant religious authorities like the state muftis, reported nstonline. com

With the volume of traffic expected to rise from 70,718 last year, to an estimated 120,000 vessels by 2015, security and protection of marine life at the Straits would have to be maintained by all users, said Yohi Sasakawa, chairman of the Japanese privately-owned Nippon Foundation, which funds security efforts at the Straits.

"Keeping the Straits open and efficient is crucial for the common benefits of the global community," Sasakawa said at a conference of shipping firms and government marine agencies in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur.

Top Malaysian Islamic body prohibits yoga to Muslims

Kuala Lumpur, Nov 23 : A top Malaysian Islamic body has reportedly issued an edict prohibiting the Muslims from practising yoga, with the view that elements of Hinduism in the ancient Indian exercise could “corrupt them”.

National Fatwa Council (NFC) Chairman Abdul Shukor Husin said that many Muslims fail to understand that yoga’s ultimate aim was to be one with a God of a different religion. He said that yoga, which originated in India, involves not just physical exercise but also includes spiritual elements, including chanting and worshipping, reported the Daily Times.

The New Strait Times quoted Human Resources Minister Dr. S. Subramaniam as saying that the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had directed the Public Service Department to take this step on Friday.

According to the paper, Badawi also gave an assurance that applications would be approved based on job descriptions and merit.

Malaysian Islamic council bans yoga for Muslims Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's Islamic regulating council on Saturday issued an edict banning Muslims from practicing yoga.

The National Fatwa Council issued the ban Saturday, saying the practice of yoga involved physical movements, worshipping and chantings which were prohibited in Islam.

Yoga, which originated in India but is widely practiced around the world, is popular among Malaysia's multiracial population.

Muslims make up two-thirds of the country's 27 million population.
